HOME MAINTENANCE TIPS
Wet Basement…
- Gutters need to be cleaned out at least twice a year
- Gutters need to have the proper fall to drain water
- Full gutters can cause water to back up and create a roof leak
- Clogged gutters may form a damaging ice dam
- Topsoil should slope down slightly away from the foundation of the house to help with drainage
Exterior Problems…
- Make sure not to have any old tires or containers that hold water sitting out; they become a breeding ground for mosquitoes
- Junk in the yard may be a violation of a zoning ordinance
- Painting can prevent deterioration of surfaces due to weather conditions
- Windows need glazing (putty that holds glass in place) to prevent deterioration and prevent cold air from entering
- Septic tanks need pumped every 1 – 2 years depending on size
Interior Problems…
- Remove mold with a bleach and water solution
- Plumbing leaks need attention as soon as possible to prevent further damage
- Furnaces should be checked annually
- Smoke and carbon monoxide detector battery replacement; change them when the time changes
- Blown fuses mean an overloaded circuit; should be checked by a professional
- Odor is added to natural gas to alert you to a leak; if you smell gas, call the gas company right away
- Know where the shutoff valves for gas and water are so you can turn them off in an emergency
